Personality typing systems, from Myers Briggs Type Indicator to the DISC and Gallup’s Strengths-Finder are very common in organizational life. The common thinking is that knowing oneself and understanding our differences can promote better working relationships, which improves organizational outcomes. While this sort of typing is definitely a benefit, putting ourselves in boxes also has a downside. We can become complacent about developmental needs ("that’s just the way I am”) and/or pigeon-hole other people into type categories without understanding the fluidity that characterizes personality expression. The Enneagram is a system of personality typing and development that provides the former understanding of self and difference without compromising the latter understanding of growth.
