    Agenda:

8:00am-9:45am: “Managing Mental Health in the Workplace: Navigating ADA, FMLA & Other Accommodation Law” (Presented by Sean Ray):

With 1 in 5 U.S. adults experiencing some form of mental illness each year (according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness) and an increasing number of organizations implementing initiatives to support employee mental health, it is important for employers to understand the legal considerations they should be aware of.  In this presentation, Sean Ray will discuss a range of employer responsibilities when it comes to employee mental health in the workplace.  In addition to many mental health conditions being protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act (“ADA”), the Family Medical Leave Act (“FMLA”), and various leave and accommodation laws, this presentation will delve into some of the more complicated issues for employers.

10:00am-12:00pm: “2023 Employment Law Update” (Presented by Stacie Damazo)

In this presentation, Stacie Damazo will cover the most recent employment law changes impacting Oregon employers.  Topics will include compliance with changes to the Oregon Workplace Fairness Act, changes to federal protections for pregnant and nursing employees, Paid Leave Oregon administration, and more.  She will also cover anticipated legislation such as the proposed independent contractor rule and the Federal Trade Commission’s proposed ban on non-compete agreements.  With each legal development, Stacie will provide attendees with practical tools and advice on how to adapt to these changes and maximize compliance in their workplaces.

1:00pm-2:00pm: “Best Practices for Wage & Hour Compliance” (Presented by Chris Morgan)

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the Department of Labor (DOL), and Oregon wage and hour regulations collectively create nuanced considerations for employers when it comes to wage and hour compliance. This can lead to a wide range of potentially costly mistakes, including misclassification of employees, unlawful paycheck deductions, improper overtime calculations, and non-compliant wage statements.

2:00pm-3:00pm: “Mitigating Legal Risk Through Thoughtful Employee Separations” (Presented by Chris Morgan)

Employment separation can be a delicate subject for even the most seasoned human resource professionals.  In this presentation, Chris Morgan will provide an overview of key considerations for employers navigating employee separation, with a specific focus on avoiding potential litigation in risky terminations.

3:15pm-5:00pm: “Meet Your New Hiring Assistant, Anne Droid: Utilizing AI in the Workplace” (Presented by Sean Ray)

While Artificial Intelligence (“AI”) can eliminate bias in the hiring process, when used ineffectively, it can also promote the same bias it is intended to remove.  In this presentation, Sean Ray will discuss supervised machine learning and other AI algorithms, including the laws governing their use and the proper application during the hiring process.
